Honoring the
Soul of Place

Why This Matters

Around the world, people have lost a meaningful connection with the places they call home.

When the land is no longer seen as sacred or alive, care and responsibility fade — and so do the cultures and ecosystems rooted in that relationship.

Biodiversity loss, damaged ecosystems, disappearing cultures, and weakened communities all trace back to this disconnect — and urbanization, gentrification, and over-tourism just accelerate it.

Yet evidence shows that places are most resilient when those with deep, local wisdom and lived experience guide the way.

We have an opportunity now to restore authority to those rooted in place, giving meaningful voice, real decision-making power, and the resources to turn their priorities into action.

Soul Swell supports local communities to protect what’s sacred, keep cultures alive, and regenerate the living fabric of place.

What We’re Building

Soul Swell is a human-managed platform that helps communities navigate complex challenges and find practical paths forward.

We’ve distilled nine time-tested “patterns” — practices shown to help places move from extraction to regeneration.

When implemented together, these patterns can shift power back to communities for lasting self-determination.

This isn’t just a hopeful idea: global evidence — including the IPBES 2025 Nexus Assessment (a UN-backed report) — shows that when social, ecological, and economic strategies are integrated with the nature and spirit of place, wellbeing and resilience follow.

The “soul of place” spans sectors because it isn’t one issue — it’s an interconnected system across movements.

Grounded in grassroots successes, Indigenous knowledge practices, and effective nonprofit operations, the patterns are tailored to each community's unique context, capacity, and starting point — whether one passionate organizer, an established institution, or a funder trying to understand what its community really needs.

Strategic analysis, recommendations, and actionable tools: so communities can move forward with confidence—no big budget or organizational backing required.

To complement the core Soul Swell platform, we’re also piloting the Community Governance Guide: an evidence-based tool that helps communities, coalitions, networks, and place-based initiatives identify appropriate governance approaches for their unique contexts.

Our Vision

A world where people live and lead in respectful relationship with their lands and Indigenous and local communities—cultures revived, ecosystems restored, and local economies thriving in balance with the Earth.

Where We Are Now

We are currently piloting both the core Soul Swell platform and the Community Governance Guide with grassroots, heritage, and Indigenous leaders in the US and a small number of communities elsewhere — learning what works and refining the tools.

If your community is working to protect traditions, steward land and waters, strengthen a sense of belonging and participation, or make greater progress with limited resources, we’d love to hear from you.

If you have a current governance question or challenge, contact us to receive a complimentary tailored analysis: governance@soulswell.org.

We’re fiscally sponsored by the Tides Foundation, dedicated to shifting power and resources to those historically denied both.
